Safety & Road Etiquette in Singapore (For Expats)

Expats usually worry more about housing costs and culture shock than about personal safety. Singapore is highly developed, very stable, and consistently ranks among the safest cities in the world.

Personal Safety

Crime rates are low and generally trend toward opportunistic, non-violent offences (e.g., theft of unattended items or pickpocketing). Basic awareness goes a long way—especially in airports, on public transport, tourist areas and nightlife spots.

Practical Precautions (Common-sense)

  • Lock doors and windows when you’re out.
  • Keep valuables out of sight; avoid leaving bags and phones unattended.
  • Stay alert in crowded places and on public transport, hotels and bars.
  • Avoid walking alone in poorly lit or deserted areas late at night.

Laws & Penalties

Laws are strictly enforced, and penalties can be severe for vandalism, drug offences and sexual offences (including with persons under 18). Foreigners are subject to the same laws and enforcement as locals.

Tip: When in doubt, don’t. If you need legal clarity, consult your employer’s HR or a qualified lawyer.

Road Safety in Singapore

Roads mirror the city’s world-class infrastructure—well lit, clearly signposted (with English signage) and well maintained. A strong enforcement presence and speed cameras are common. Keep within posted limits and follow lane discipline.
