Under the former postal code system, Singapore was segregated into 28 districts, a practice property agents still employ when referencing property locations today. District 1 received its designation due to the first general post office's presence in that region.
In the 1950s, Singapore adopted a two-digit postal code system, referring to these as districts. By 1979, the system transitioned to incorporate four-digit postal codes, where each code began with the district number followed by specific sector numbers.
The system recognised 81 distinct sectors in total. However, as the number of buildings surged over time, the postal system had to evolve to cater to this growth. Consequently, in 1995, a transformation took place and birthed the current system, which features six-digit postal codes.
This six-digit postal code system assigns each building a unique number, with the initial two digits reflecting the sector numbers previously employed in the four-digit postal code system.
Why is the district number important? Sometimes property prices can vary significantly by just being on a different district number, even though the property is just across the road.
