Closing the Circle Line Loop
Three new Circle Line (CCL) stations, Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road, will open to close the loop between HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations on July 12. Seventeen years after the Circle Line first opened, the opening of these stations marks the completion of CCL Stage 6.
The Land Transport Authority estimated that the travel time from station to station along the new stretch is about two minutes. Before the opening of the new CCL stretch, the public can preview and ride for free between the three stations on July 4, from 9.30am to 9pm.
With the opening of the three stations, some journeys will have shorter-distance routes, resulting in lower fares, the council added. MRT fares are calculated based on the shortest possible distance between the origin and destination stations, regardless of the actual route taken by a commuter or the travel time, said the Public Transport Council (PTC). Commuters will not incur the additional $2 rail overstay penalty if they remain within the rail network longer than two hours, which is more than sufficient to complete any rail journey in the network.
Faster Journeys and Lower Fares
After CCL Stage 6, several routes will see both shorter travel times and lower fares. The journey from HarbourFront to Bayfront, which currently requires transferring from the North East Line at Chinatown to the Downtown Line, will become a direct ride on the CCL, cutting travel time from 14 minutes to 12 minutes and fares from $1.59 to $1.49.
The journey from Pasir Panjang to Marina Bay will be reduced from 24 minutes to 17 minutes with fares dropping from $1.82 to $1.75. Labrador Park to Gardens by the Bay will go from 25 minutes to 23 minutes ($1.82 to $1.75), and Telok Blangah to Marine Parade from 34 minutes to 32 minutes ($2.07 to $2.02).
For commuters like 20-year-old Koh Kai Sern, who travels from his Clementi home to Bras Basah Complex every Friday for singing class, the journey currently takes slightly over an hour. Come July 12, his journey will be cut by around 30 minutes, as he can take the CCL from Haw Par Villa MRT station to Esplanade MRT station in about 22 minutes.
