About 11,000 Homes Planned at Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks, With More Greenery Kept After Public Feedback
HDB said on 28 October that about 11,000 homes will be built at Maju Forest and Gillman Barracks over the next decade under revised plans that keep more of both sites green. That is roughly 1,200 fewer homes than the original proposals could have yielded. Most will be public housing, and taller blocks are being considered to make up for the land set aside.

What Changed After the Consultation
HDB received about 7,200 submissions on Maju Forest and 2,300 on Gillman Barracks during the July to August consultation. Many asked for more greenery to be kept, citing habitat, biodiversity and ecological connectivity. Some suggested building on brownfield sites instead.
At Maju Forest, the extra 2 ha will be kept mainly in the southern part of the site, creating a larger green area along the Clementi Nature Corridor. It will become a new nature park. At Gillman Barracks, the extra 4 ha sits mainly in the east, preserving the forest around the hillock and widening the ecological corridor along Lock Road and Malan Road. That greenery will form part of the upcoming Alexandra Nature Park. Twenty-five buildings of exceptional or high heritage significance will be kept and repurposed for shops and amenities.
Why Not Build Elsewhere?
HDB said it had reviewed vacant and brownfield sites nearby, including those suggested by the public. Some, such as the former Raffles Junior College campus at Mount Sinai, Depot Lane Industrial Estate, Outram Hill and the Greater Southern Waterfront sites, are already planned for housing. Others, such as Maju Camp, Pasir Panjang Distripark and Alexandra Village Industrial Estate, are still needed for other uses or will not be ready in time. HDB pointed to strong demand from the large cohorts born in the late 1980s and 1990s, and from smaller households, including singles and seniors living on their own.
