What Was Announced

The approved projects are linked to 28,755 potential jobs, including 12,796 from projects already implemented. The new ministerial committee, co-chaired by Singapore’s National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat and Malaysia’s Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, replaces the Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia and covers a wider range of cooperation.

A blueprint for the JS-SEZ master plan is due to be launched at the Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in December. The third JS-SEZ Joint Investment Forum will be held in Malaysia by the first quarter of 2027.

Connectivity Is the Key

Mr Chee highlighted improvements to cross-border taxi services, the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link and talks on better ferry services. The RTS Link is due to open in February 2027, connecting Woodlands North station to Bukit Chagar in Johor. Malaysia is also developing the Nexus Sedenak innovation and industrial hub and financial services in Forest City.

AsianPrime PerspectiveCloser economic links with Johor will shape where people choose to live and work. For Singapore homeowners, the clearest effect is likely in the north, where the RTS Link and the Thomson-East Coast Line give Woodlands residents a direct route across the Causeway. Buyers considering property in Johor itself should treat it as a separate market, with different laws, financing rules and resale conditions, and seek advice on both sides of the border.
